Understanding the Different Kinds of Pallet Racks on the Market

February 26, 2019 By

Pallet racks come in a variety of dimensions and sizes. With various functionalities and features incorporated into a rack, you can select the racking manufacturer that perfectly fits your application. These are used in industrial setups that require heavy-duty shelving. If you choose the racking wisely, it can help in maximizing the storage space of a warehouse. Once you have decided on the major function of the rack (whether you intend to opt for dense storage or better functionality), you can select the rack accordingly.

Different Types of Pallet Racks

The following styles and types of pallet racks are available:

1. Roll-formed

These are manufactured using durable and high-quality steel. Generally, they come with teardrop clip holes, which enables complete flexibility in shelf height adjustment. The clip holes can be structured in slotted styles as well. These racks can be used for several purposes and often used in applications which require constant change of the product dimension.

2. Structural

These are used in applications that are so demanding. They are attached to the floor, making them more durable compared to their counterparts. With a well-designed foundation, they can handle heavier weights more efficiently. These racks can be structured in a way to provide support for the roof of the warehouse apartment as well. Due to their robust construction and installation, they can also be used to store products that require forklifts to arrange or move them.

3. Drive-In & Drive-Through

These systems enable forklifts to gain access to the facility and navigate between the racks. Drive-in systems work best with the ‘last in, first out’ (LIFO) technique, whereas drive-through systems are more appropriate for the ‘first in, first out’ (FIFO) method.

4. Pallet Flow Racks

These feature skate wheels at an incline. They use gravity to move materials along the rack. They employ the FIFO system allowing older materials to be removed first. This is beneficial in moving products with expiration dates like medicines or food.

5. Pushback Pallet Racks

The height range is between 2 – 6 pallets deep. Compared to the pallet flow racks, they also use gravity to arrange the pallets and its contents too. Nevertheless, they use the LIFO system.

6. Carton Flow Racks

These are integrated into the incline as well. Hence, when one product is removed, the others move into position automatically, slowly moving forward. Hence, they are useful for the manual sorting of products. When used on a larger scale, the conveyors can be integrated with these racks to ensure that the system is more efficient.

Pallet racks are incredibly useful in warehouses as they help in boosting the storage capacity of the warehouse without occupying extra space. They make use of the vertical space of a warehouse. They can be customized and adjusted according to the requirements of the application. They can also be designed by incorporating features that allow for the simple integration of material handling accessory like 4-way forklifts. Selecting the right pallet rack will allow you to exploit the benefits for a long time, and vice versa.
