Pueblo City Schools Seeks Foreign Language Translators

Pueblo City Schools is asking community members who are fluent
in any foreign language to contact the district and help support the
district’s goal of exceeding international curriculum standards. The
bilingual tutors and translators who are selected will serve at selected
schools and be compensated based on their expertise and training.

The district is creating a Translator and Tutor World Language Data Bank,
partially in response to an increase in students from Asian countries, but
also to better serve English Language Learner students and families from
Korea, Vietnam, China and Italy. Flora Camejo-Lenhart, (English Language
Acquisition Consultant) said there is a critical need for bilingual experts
to provide tutoring and translation services. “We have a rapidly growing
international student body, so we must have adults who are fluent in
virtually every language to help us achieve our mission,” she said.

The call for foreign language translators may also eventually support the
district’s new comprehensive Pre-12 world language and culture curriculum
that allows for more than one language to be offered to students. The new
curriculum, scheduled to be implemented by SY 2008-2009 will be aligned
with Colorado and international foreign language standards. The purpose of
the language and cultural curriculum is to support the district’s mission
of preparing all Pueblo City School students to compete in a global
society.
