St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center Celebrated it’s 60th Anniversary MilestoneSt. Mary-Corwin Medical Center will hold a community celebration to honor the 60th Anniversary of the joining of St. Mary’s Hospital and Corwin Hospital. The celebration was held on Thursday, November 13, in the St. Mary-Corwin Dorcy Cancer Center located at 2004 Lake Avenue. Over 125 years ago, St. Mary-Corwin was established from simple beginnings when six Catholic Sisters of Charity came to Pueblo from Cincinnati, Ohio in 1882 to care for people in southern Colorado who were unable to travel to Denver for their healthcare needs. Initially housed in a two-story boarding house and named St. Mary’s Hospital, the facility evolved into a large community hospital that became known for its excellence and care for the underserved in the area. During that same period, the Colorado Coal and Iron Company (which became the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corporation [CF&I]) hired Dr. R.W. Corwin to establish a medical department for the steel manufacturing plant. Dr. Corwin’s clinic eventually became Minnequa Hospital, and then renamed Corwin Hospital. Dr. Corwin believed in taking care of whole person - body, mind and spirit. This was a caring, holistic approach to healthcare in the late 1800’s, one that St. Mary-Corwin continues to foster today. Sixty years ago, the future of these two hospitals would dramatically change. CF&I decided to divest their company-owned hospital while St. Mary’s Hospital was seeking to expand theirs. Convinced of the Sisters’ good work and reputation for providing excellent healthcare, CF&I’s board of directors agreed to transfer ownership of Corwin Hospital to the Sisters of Charity for just $1, creating what is now known as St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. Today, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is a major, tertiary care, regional referral hospital that continues to impact the community with the original healing beliefs which were the foundation of today’s modern healthcare provider. Although innovative medical technology and procedures have advanced with enormous strides over the past century, St. Mary-Corwin continues to rejoice in our rich faith-based heritage which is woven through the tapestry of world class healthcare that we provide to the people in Pueblo, throughout Southern Colorado and into our neighboring states.
