Colorado Springs Philharmonic Classical Masterworks Series Opens with

Carmina Burana

It's an ear-rattling sonic spectacle when the Colorado Springs Chorale, the Colorado Springs Children's Chorale and three soloists join conductor Lawrence Leighton Smith and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic for Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana."

The combination of earthy Medieval poetry and powerful masses of sound have made it one of the most popular of all classical works, and the inspiration for generations of film composers.

"If Huns, Vikings, Goths, Malmelukes, Tatars, Turks or Mongols are about to lay waste to civilisation, despoiling the virgins, defiling the temples and eviscerating the city fathers, you can count on Carl Orff turning up," wrote Joe Queenan in The Guardian. It's been used in everything ranging from Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers" to an ad for Guinness.

Three acclaimed soloists reprise their roles from the Philharmonic's last performance of this piece in 2004: soprano Judeth Shay Burns, tenor Brian Patrick Leatherman, and baritone Peter Tuff.

The program also includes Liszt's "Les Preludes," the most melodic of the composer's symphonic poems.
