Susie Mariscal Retires From OJC After 32 Years Of Service

Otero Junior College will be honoring Susie Mariscal, a 32-year employee at OJC, at a retirement reception on Friday, Feb. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Macdonald Hall, room 120. Mariscal will be retiring from the college at the end of February. The public is invited to attend the retirement reception.

Mariscal began her career at OJC in 1975, working part-time in the college’s print shop and as a switchboard operator. In 1976 she became a full-time employee and spent the next 18 years as the college’s switchboard operator. In 1994, the college upgraded its telephone system so that each office had direct phone lines, thus doing away with the massive switchboard system. Mariscal then worked in the cashier’s office before moving into her present position as an accounting technician and assistant to the Human Resource Director. Mariscal assists with many of the day-to-day operations of the Human Resource Office, including payroll, employee leave, and database management.

Marlene Boettcher, director of Human Resources at OJC, stated that Mariscal has been an integral part of the HR office and the OJC campus. “Susie has been my right hand and go-to person. We’ve gone through some major system changes in our office and regardless of what I ask of her, she has always come through. She is an immense asset to this college and we all will miss her very much,” said Boettcher.

Mariscal, who was recently named the 2007-2008 OJC Classified Employee of the Year, lives in La Junta with her husband, Jesus. The couple has two grown daughters and three grandchildren.
