Citizen Outreach Group Chair Receives Chamber AwardJan Doran, chair of the El Paso County Citizen Outreach Group (COG), was presented with the Colorado Springs Chamber 2008 Special Recognition Award for her commitment to this region through volunteerism at the Chamber’s State of the Region luncheon on Jan. 30.
On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, County Commissioner Sallie Clark and Colorado Springs Councilwoman Margaret Radford presented Doran with the award, thanking her for making El Paso County a better place to live and work. “It was with great pleasure that we were able to present this important award to Jan,” said Radford. “She is so involved with the community and deserves recognition for all she has done. She is an advocate for neighborhood preservation, open government and the public process. She facilitates neighborhood concerns and works with planning officials and the development community to make this area a better place to live.” Doran has worked with the COG, Council of Neighbors and Organizations and Citizens for Effective Government, among others. She has overseen and participated in all activities related to governmental and community agencies, representing more than 60 neighborhood organizations throughout the Pikes Peak Region. She has served on numerous boards and commissions with both El Paso County and the city of Colorado Springs, including such subjects as law enforcement and fire protection, utilities, geologic hazards, streamside issues and development codes. Doran holds a degree in Business Administration and has worked in various business and non-profit roles in the community during her career. In more recent years, Doran has dedicated her time to her community as an active volunteer. Commissioner Clark began by stating the reasons for the award, yet without naming the recipient to keep the mystery going. “To watch her work the room or an issue with our elected officials and other leaders is to watch the maestro. She excels at her craft and her commitment to this region is extraordinary. She has made it a much better place to live and work and has made a tremendous difference through her work with the El Paso County Citizen Outreach Group, Council of Neighbors and Organizations and her work with Citizens for Effective Government. And, while I can’t mention all of the committees she has served on because we would be here all day, it’s an honor to present this award to someone who is so deserving, giving her time freely and voluntarily to our community,” Clark said. Caught by surprise, Doran accepted the honor with grace. “I am so honored and surprised to have been given this award by El Paso County and the Chamber,” she said. “My philosophy is to serve God, my family and my community. This was something I never expected to receive, but am truly grateful for this recognition.”
