Ya Basta…. Enough is enough
2008
is here nice and cool, plenty of snow, hope you all enjoyed your holidays, to
those lucky ones that were fortunate enough to spend it with love ones, reflect
and appreciate the fact that you spent it with loved ones. Not all of us are
that fortunate. Even though at times we are away from loved ones, during this
holiday period, we often don’t realize how much we learn about other people,
their customs, how they celebrate, while away from the US. One of the most
prominent experiences I remember is that in many countries, Such as in Italy,
Christmas sales do not dominate the season. Culture is the most prevalent
factor. Certain things are done a certain way, not matter what Macy’s says. Just
look at the Christmas in Southern Colorado, we have Italian breads; German
breads and the old stand by tamales. I think Lt. Pike started the food thing
(tamales) when he got lost and there was no pancake house in Walsenburg. Just
tamales.
Finally, to my point, hermanos y hermanas, we need to become more
visible in our communities. If the tamales can endure and be visual for so long,
why can’t we as a community. We need to make our own changes, changes with in,
with out and among us. I have never asked, I am asking now, what can we do in
the Hispanic community, what can be done, for us to become more visible and
active.
Send me your thoughts, lets make 2008, the year of change for Hispanics
In Southern Colorado
