PCC’s SBDC featured in state women’s magazine

Known more for helping business owners succeed, the Small Business Development Center at Pueblo Community College finds itself in the spotlight today after being showcased because of its own successful operation.

The Pueblo SBDC is featured in the Sept./Oct. 2007 issue of Divapreneurs magazine, a statewide publication that promotes women in business. In it, Caroline Parra, the SBDC’s executive director, highlights some of the services offered by the center as well as a female business client that has succeeded because of the assistance she received from the center.

Parra was asked to pen the article – titled “Business 101” -- because of the Pueblo SBDC’s reputation for helping its business clients succeed. Much of the article focuses on Shelley McPherson, a businesswoman who is successfully running her Wiping Rags, Inc. company in Pueblo thanks to the assistance she received from the SBDC.
McPherson took advantage of the SBDC’s many business services that put her on the path to success.

The SBDC offers "one-stop" assistance to small businesses, making a wide variety of information and guidance available in central and easily accessible locations. It provides services for Pueblo, Fremont, and Custer counties and has office locations in Pueblo and Canon City.

One of its main services is free one-on-one counseling for both existing and start-up businesses. It also conducts seminars and workshops designed to help small business owners improve their business knowledge and plan their start-up business.

It also conducts a 12-week Leading Edge course that prospective business owners can take to learn marketing strategies, money management and financing options. One of the key features of the course is that persons develop a complete business plan over the 12-week class period.

The SBDC also maintains active involvement with other small business service providers in Pueblo and elsewhere in the state.
