Education

As you see by our front-page story, education is on the agenda for most Hispanics. The world has to realize that Hispanics are a complex group. They cannot be described with a simple paintbrush approach. The largest difference between Hispanics born in the US and those that have recently immigrated to the US is language; some people still cannot understand why English is our first language.

Advertisers, especially in the last six years, have tried to identify some of those differences. For many of us, there is no proof they have made progress. A brilliant mind in Miami or New York cannot, to date, communicate with someone from Northern New México and Southern Colorado, for example. People from these areas mostly are bilingual, we may not impress those from Spain but we manage.

This is why education is so important for our youth. We have a lot to offer this country, not just bodies for battle. Positive results take effort by all of us, the parents, godparents, grandma neighbors, etc. Take interest in what our youth are doing in school.

There is more education opportunity that ever before, and we must take advantage of them.

The challenge to educate our youth is there; we must rise to meet the challenge.
