El Paso County Delegation Supports Efforts to Bring Federal Immigration Office to Colorado SpringsThe El Paso County Board of Commissioners, Sheriff Terry Maketa, 4th Judicial District Attorney John Newsome and the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce are working with members from the Colorado General Assembly to establish a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office in El Paso County. The most recent effort to bring a new ICE office and holding facility to Colorado Springs includes two letters, signed by members of the Colorado Senate and House of Representatives, which have been sent to congress, requesting authorization and funding for an ICE office. Senators Dave Schultheis, Andy McElhany, Ron May and John Morse, and Representatives Larry Liston, Amy Stephens, Kent Lambert, Michael Merrifield, Bill Cadman, Stella Garza Hicks, Marsha Looper and Bob Gardner all signed the letters to United States Senators Allard and Salazar and Congressman Doug Lamborn. “These bipartisan letters of support for an ICE office in Colorado Springs demonstrate the need to relieve the constant overcrowding of our local jail,” said County Commissioner Jim Bensberg. A federal ICE office will also be able to implement preventative programs such as, Operation Predator to address child exploitation, cyber crimes, fugitive operations, human smuggling, drug trafficking from Mexico and worksite enforcement.
