Latino Community: Get Involved! Community Town Hall Meeting
2nd Annual Color Colorado Conference Presented by Progressive Majority
Colorado
There is a civic and political crisis in Colorado. Many Latinos and people
from communities of color feel disconnected from both the civic and political
process, although many vital issues affect them where they live. Latinos and
others who feel underrepresented in their own communities and those who want to
make a positive difference should attend the 2nd Annual Color Colorado
Conference on Saturday, February 17th, 2007, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the
Denver Merchandise Mart.
Inspiration, guidance and critical tools for community leadership and
empowerment will be offered through a key-note address, various panel
discussions and seminars at this non-partisan, all-day event. The conference
will host two tracks: one track for individuals who want to learn civic and
community leadership skills and one track for future political candidates. A
free continental breakfast and lunch will be served and registration is FREE!
Are you concerned about what is happening in your community? Do you feel
helpless to make changes? Do you wish you knew how you could get involved to
make a difference?
This conference is for all, especially Latinos and others from communities of
color, who answer "Yes" to these questions.
"Too often, Coloradoans from communities of color do not feel welcome in
politics. The goal of this free conference is to show that our diversity is a
cornerstone of our community and political strength," said Joe Miklosi, Colorado
State Director of Progressive Majority and co-host of the conference.
Last year’s conference inspired a new, diverse generation of community leaders.
This year, Progressive Majority offers a more focused agenda by offering two
tracks. The Future Candidate track will prepare individuals who seek to run for
public office. The Citizen Leaders track offers insight and training for those
who want to lead improvements in their communities.
The conference was created by Progressive Majority as part of its objective to
recruit diverse candidates to run for municipal and legislative office who will
champion progressive values and to increase volunteer participation for
individuals who do not run for office but want to remain involved in their
community. Through its Racial Justice Campaign, Progressive Majority prioritizes
the recruitment and election of leaders from communities of color to represent
our communities and to fight for long-term political equality.
Progressive Majority was founded in 2001 to recruit, train, and elect candidates
who, once in office, will champion progressive values and lead the fight for
economic opportunity and fiscal accountability, expanding civil and labor
rights, reducing health care costs, improving public education, protecting open
spaces, parks, trails, and the environment, and maintaining reproductive
freedom. Progressive Majority has offices in eight states and is headquartered
in Washington D.C. Progressive Majority Colorado has been in existence for two
years.
