2007 UCCS Math Olympiad Draws Near

The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad, the largest essay-type mathematical competition in the United States, is set for April 20 at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Founded 23 years ago and chaired since 1984 by Alex Soifer, professor, College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the Math Olympiad offers middle and high school students a chance to demonstrate academic skills and to use those skills to compete for medals, scholarships and other prizes.

This year some 700 students are expected to sharpen their pencils and take on “The Famous Five,” five mind-bending problems. These mental athletes have four hours to complete their solutions and then present their answers in essay form.

“Mind-numbing drill often turns students away from mathematics. The Olympiad brings excitement to mathematics learning,” Soifer said. “The Olympiad is a powerful tool of attracting new generations to the study of mathematics, and more generally creative fields, such as arts and sciences.”

An awards ceremony hosted by UCCS, community leaders and several state businesses, on April 27 will consist of a lecture to review the problems and solutions, presentations of awards and certificates and a reception.

“We look forward to celebrating our twenty-fourth year of recognizing talented young mathematicians throughout Colorado and giving students the advantage of this wonderful opportunity to exemplify their academic talents,” Soifer said.

UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 26 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and four doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,600 students annually. For more information, visit http://www.uccs.edu.
