Buell Children’s Museum celebrates cultures

It’s a fiesta with Play Down Mexico Way! Jan. 13- May 19

Discover a celebration of the many cultures of Mexico and Central America with a fiesta of hands-on fun at the Buell Children’s Museum at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center. From Jan. 13 through May 19, Play Down Mexico Way will feature a variety of fun projects and experiences including holiday decorations, Mariachi music, swirling costumes and Spanish language. The fiesta will begin with ¡Olè! Saturday on Jan. 13 with the grand opening of the exhibition and artist demonstrations featuring instructors from our School of Arts. Each artist will have an art activity for visitors to try from noon to 2 p.m. in the Regional Gallery.

The main events include:

Dream Carver
Let the story of Oaxacan woodcarver Manuel Jimenez and our gallery full of brightly–colored Oaxaca animals inspire you to fashion your own magnificent critter. Create a crazy, colorful critter like those you see around you, be they porcupines, rabbits, dragons, birds or whatever!

Goin’ Buggy in Sensations
Danny Studen & John Wilbar, Artists
From swooping dragonflies and dotted ladybugs, buzzing bees and marching ants — here is one invasion of wiggly things that will have you itching for more!

Put Your Best Face Forward
Mask Collection on loan from Charles Trent
Create a celebration mask modeled after the ones on display in this fantastical collection of indigenous masks and many others, created by the 2nd grade students of Sharon Barker at St. Therese Catholic School.

Mola Explosion!
From the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center’s Shirley Barr Mola Collection
Use the creative Crayola® technology to design a traditional appliqué-like mola. No sewing skills required. You won’t need fabric, needle or thread!

Stuffee® is Ba-a-a-ack!
Sponsored by the Pueblo City-County Health Department STEPs Program
Who opens his heart to everyone? It’s that big, blue-haired, soft sculpture — Stuffee®. Let Stuffee® teach you about the human body and how it functions. In addition to learning about the importance of your lungs and the harmful effects of second hand smoke, you can also listen to Stuffee®’s heartbeat, take his pulse and hold soft sculpture reproductions of his heart, lungs, intestine, stomach and other organs. Everyone knows, it’s what’s inside that counts!

Folk Art
The Buell Children’s Museum will be a carnival of traditional Mexican folk art activities. Pattern a papel picado — festive paper cutout — to adorn your abode. Make and paint a plaster mural ala Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Turn an egg carton into a colorful snake, a spider or an army of ants. Hatch a heavenly Monarch butterfly. Make a Mexican Milagro. Foster a friendship when you craft an amigo or amiga doll like traditional ones from Central America. Practice the fiber art activity popular on both sides of the border to build an Ojo de Dios — eye of God. Build a brilliant bunch of incredibly beautiful, yet incredibly simple, tissue paper flowers. Make a no-mess, mini-piñata. Weave a basket. Or create a clay sun sculpture.

La Lengua y Cultura de Hispania
Want to learn a little about the language and culture of Mexico and places south? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Help bilingual Latina heroine Dora Explorer find the Lost City; learn some Spanish language and practice your math skill while you’re at it! Read The Pot that Juan Built by author Nancy Andrews-Goebel and illustrator David Diaz. This Caldecott winner tells the engrossing biography of Mexican potter Juan Quezada, both at work and seeking inspiration in the scrubby foothills of his native land. Sway to Latin sounds brought to you by Putamayo and dig into the music basket to pick out your favorite percussion instrument and play along. Celebrate Hispanic heritage by trying on a serape, hat, rebozos or poncho. Who said you couldn’t play with your food? Find the tamale, enchilada, taco, quesadilla, empanada, rice, beans and flan. On special Saturdays, receive sample packages of 505 Southwestern Chile and Salsa, plus tasty recipe cards for more down New Mexico way treats. Play “Loteria” — a traditional game of chance —with vocabulary cards instead of numbers. Learn the language of the fan, a language that can become an extension of one-self and is a fun way of communicating without having to speak. Sorprendido, contento, confundido. Recreate dynamite expressions on our magnetic board or make a silly face with the window special effects markers.

El Cine
Movie anyone? Join us in the Magic Carpet Theater to learn about the history, culture, landscape, life and heritage of Mexican Americans. Reconnect with Dora Explorer. Laugh and learn with this animated program about multi-cultural friends.

¡Olé! Saturdays
Join the fiesta as the Arts Center celebrates Mexico on the following Saturdays with artist demonstrations featuring instructors from our School of Arts. Each will have an art activity for you to try from noon to 2 p.m. in the Regional Gallery. Tammy Verderaime will show her talent in felting. Join the fun by constructing a fabulous felt and leather keychain. Sparky the Art Dog will also be making an appearance.
