THE 12TH ANNUAL CHILE & FRIJOLES FESTIVAL, September 22-24. The Greater Pueblo
Chamber of Commerce created the festival as a fun fall event designed to promote
the area’s agriculture, especially its home-grown chilies and pinto beans, as
well as to display the works of many talented artisans and craftsmen. The
festival will take place in downtown Pueblo, on Union Avenue between 1st Street
and “B” Street.
The festival kicks off with REPRESENTING THE WEST ART SHOW & SALE at the Sangre
de Cristo Arts Center on Thursday, September 21, 2006 from 5-8pm. Now in its
fourth year, “Representing the West” features two- and three-dimensional
artworks with the intent to provide a national annual invitational exhibition of
traditional representational art in a realist tradition. The works depicts the
western American genre highlighting the diversity of the land and its people.
The exhibit and sale will run through November 19, 2006.
The festival will feature CONTINUOUS LIVE ENTERTAINMENT in four entertainment
tents. All scheduled performers are local talent, with bands playing all genres
of music from Latin and Tex-Mex to folk, rock, blues and R & B. Pueblo area
dance groups will also perform Saturday and Sunday from 10am-2pm. New this year
to the festival is the Comcast Sports & Beer Garden featuring televisions
broadcasting the Bell Game Friday night, Major League Baseball and college
football Saturday and professional football Sunday.
The 12th Annual Loaf ‘N Jug Chile & Frijoles Festival will heat things up with
the CHILE & SALSA SHOWDOWN, sponsored by Pueblo Workforce Center. The food
competition will be held at the Pueblo Convention Center. Commercial division
will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2006. Winners of each category for
the commercial entries will receive $500 along with bragging rights.
Non-commercial division will take place on Sunday, September 24, entries will be
awarded prizes for the top three places; first place will receive $100, second
place will receive $50 and third place will receive $25. Both commercial and
non-commercial have three categories that will be judged including best red
chili, green chili and salsa. Entry forms are available at the Greater Pueblo

The RIVERWALK EXCURSION and PEDAL BOATS will be open during the Festival on
Saturday and Sunday starting at 10am. The Riverwalk’s Floating Bar will also be
open to quench the thirst with an ice cold beer in the shade!
The Pueblo Convention Center is hosting the 7th ANNUAL ART SHOW in conjunction
with the Chile & Frijoles Festival. The opening reception will be on Friday,
September 22, from 6pm-8pm. The arts show is slated for Saturday, September 23,
from 10am-6pm and Sunday, September 24, from 10am-3pm. The art show is free to
the public.
The “HOT TO TROT” 5K FUN RUN & 2 MILE FUN WALK starts and finishes at the Gold
Dust Saloon, 217 S. Union, on Sunday September 24, 2006. 5K starting time is 8am
and the 2 mile walk starting time is 7:45am. The course goes through the
Historic District, the Riverwalk and the Arkansas River trail. Entry fee is $20
if received by September 17, $25 if received late and $30 if received on race

22nd. A Kiddie K has been added this year and is a one mile race starting at
7:30am. 5K run and 2 mile walk participants receive a 2006 Chile & Frijoles “Hot
to Trot” t-shirt, breakfast at the Gold Dust Saloon immediately following the
race and a coupon book good at Historic District restaurants for discounts

HOT! HOT! HOT! That is what participants of last years annual JALAPENO EATING
CONTEST said. This year during the 12th Annual Chile & Frijoles Festival things
are sure to be just as hot. Individuals that are interested in competing in the
Jalapeno-Eating Contest can pick up entry forms at the Greater Pueblo Chamber of
Commerce booth at the 12th Annual Chile & Frijoles Festival. $1 entry fee per
person, 1st place wins $100, second place wins $50 and 3rd place wins $25. The
competition will be held Sunday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the Wells Fargo
Tent.
Experience the southwest frontier on Saturday, September 23, and Sunday,
September 24, when El History Museum and Trading Post comes alive at the 18th
ANNUAL MERCADO (frontier market). There will be regularly scheduled tours of the
six-period rooms of the adobe post that will tell the story of the original El
Pueblo (1842-1854). Guides will present information on the post’s traders,
Mexican settlers, women of El Pueblo, Mormons from nearby Mormon Town (1846-47),
and the dramatic demise of the post (1854) as visitors observe living-history
interpreters at work and play.
Explore the plaza and watch cooking, blacksmithing and adobe making
demonstrations. Discover the historical use of herbs from the Pueblo Herb
Society. Other guest interpreters include blacksmiths from Bents’ Fort and Rock
Ledge Ranch and Mormon representation. Inside of the museum entrance there will
be free historic quilting demonstrations by Pride City Quilt Guild and the
Pueblo Handweavers Guild will be spinning wool and weaving.
Throughout the weekend, the Pueblo Friendship Powwow Association will be dancing
and drumming, and folkloric dancers will also perform. Admission is free to the
outdoor Mercado, held from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. Museum admission
will be discounted to one dollar! Children 5 and under are free. Donations will
be accepted for trading post tours. Call the museum at 583-0453 for more
information. The museum is located at 301 North Union near the chile festival
entrance!
The PUEBLO PADDLERS will join the festival for the first time this year with a
multitude of events on the kayak course. On Saturday and Sunday during the
festival, Raft Masters will be on hand providing free raft rides from 10am until
3pm. At noon on Saturday the paddlers will host a Whitewater Rodeo featuring a
freestyle kayaking contest. The fun continues Sunday with a “Hot Trick” contest
at noon. Kayakers will be throwing down their biggest, baddest or dumbest tricks
in hopes of winning top honors. At 1pm on Sunday the paddlers will host a Boogie
Board contest to determine the top whitewater boogie boarder. At 2pm the “Pepper
Plunge” raft race will launch home-made pepper themed rafts down the Arkansas.
The raft with the largest portion remaining intact after the plunge wins. At 3pm
the Pueblo Paddlers will conclude their festivities with a Whitewater Ducky
Dash! Purchase a numbered Ducky and race it. The first Ducky over the finish
line wins the prize. So this year take a detour over the Union Avenue Bridge and
cool out with the Pueblo Paddlers!
