La Gente chairman honored for work with youngsters

Pablo Carlos Mora, chairman of La Gente Youth Sports' board of directors, was honored July 20 for his work with the Pueblo program.

Mora was named a "Hispanic Hero" during halftime ceremonies at a Colorado Rapids game at Invesco Field that marked Hispanic Heritage night. The Colorado Rapids soccer team was part of a double-header match that night.

Mora was voted by the KSE Latino Advisory Committee as one of the 2006 Colorado Rapids Hispanic Heroes of the community for his work with youth in the Pueblo community.

Mora, who is regional editor at The Pueblo Chieftain, was one of five individuals selected to receive the award for having made a positive impact in the Colorado Hispanic community during the past year.

La Gente Youth Sports provides athletic and recreational opportunities to low-income boys and girls who want to play softball, basketball, soccer and other sports. La Gente also sponsors recreational outings such as camping trips and field trips to Colorado Rockies games. The group was founded in 1976 and brought to life by the late John Madrid, who with other parents wanted to give kids a positive outlet for their energy.

The nonprofit group is building a recreation center next to its community center at 2804 E. 12th St. in the Eastwood Heights neighborhood.

If you would like to volunteer to work with kids or contribute to the building of the new recreation center, call executive director Zach Valdez at (719) 406-9200.
