Colorado Springs energy rates lowest in Colorado

Colorado Springs Utilities customers paid less for electricity and natural gas than all other Colorado cities included in a first quarter 2006 report. The energy portion of a typical Colorado Springs residential monthly bill was $121.56 compared to the state average of $155.66 and the national average of $166.22.

Typical combined electric and natural gas bill
Colorado Springs $ 121.56
Gunnison $ 131.20
Loveland $ 148.53
Denver $ 149.38
Glenwood Springs $ 154.83
Greeley $ 169.98
Grand Junction $ 184.12
Pueblo $ 185.69

The results are part of a quarterly cost of living study of nearly 300 cities in the US conducted by ACCRA, a nonprofit research group based in Arlington, VA. Bill amounts are based on first quarter 2006 electric and natural gas rates and typical year-round average monthly usage.

“Our proactive hedging program locks in the price on a large portion of our natural gas supply, keeping our rates more stable,” said Edward Easterlin, chief planning and finance officer for Springs Utilities.

Colorado Springs City Council recently approved a reduction in the natural gas cost adjustment, or GCA, effective June 1, 2006. Typical residential customers will see a decrease of about 13 percent in the natural gas portion of their bill.
