Chief Velez honored as Public Administrator of the Year
Colorado Springs Police Chief
Luis Velez received the Leo C. Reithmayer Public Administrator of the Year Award
for 2006. The public service achievement award was presented to Chief Velez by
PI ALPHA ALPHA and the University Of Colorado Graduate School Of Public Affairs
at a ceremony in Denver on Friday evening.
Chief Velez has served the Colorado Springs Police Department for 31 years
and was sworn as Chief of Police on May 13, 2002. Prior to his current
assignment, he was the Deputy Chief in command of the Operations Support Bureau.
As a Captain, he directed the Office of Professional Standards, Gold Hill
Division, Central Division and Sand Creek Division.
Chief Velez holds a Doctorate of Management degree from Colorado Technical
University; a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Colorado
at Colorado Springs and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the University
of Southern Colorado.
