Eleven Mile Reservoir Opens For Boating
The reservoir at Eleven Mile State Park is now open for boating. According to
park officials, the reservoir remains full for the second straight year, and
boat ramps at Witcher's Cove and the North Shore are open. Over 200 campsites
are also available.
The reservoir opened to boating much earlier this year than usual thanks to warm
and windy weather more characteristic of spring. Some ice is likely to remain on
the lake, so boaters will need to exercise caution. Employees will be working in
the coming weeks to mark known hazards.
According to park manager Kevin Tobey, "Shortly before the ice came off the
reservoir this year, ice fishermen were reporting that they were seeing large
numbers of trout on their sonar units, but had a difficult time landing the
fish. The fish that have been caught are full of shrimp and crawfish, so anglers
will need to work hard to find the right baits to attract them.” Tobey added,
“Kokanee fishing was outstanding much of the winter, as long as people knew
where the fish were hanging out. At times it looked as though a small mining
camp opened up near Witcher’s Cove as people set up fishing shelters and caught
impressive numbers of fish in about 40 feet of water.” Large numbers of three
year old Kokanee salmon should be found throughout the summer in the deeper
water accessible by boat.
Nearby Spinney Mountain Reservoir remains closed with 50 percent ice
coverage. For more information, call the park office at 719-748-3401 or access
