Lionel Rivera Kicks Off Campaign for U.S. Congress
Colorado Springs, CO, March 23, 2006 -- Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera
officially announced his candidacy for the United States Congress this afternoon
at a rally of supporters in Colorado Springs.

Rivera highlighted his military service, experience as mayor, business
background and positive vision for the community as the credentials that will
set him apart from the Republican primary field. The primary for Colorado’s 5th
Congressional District is scheduled for August 8, 2006.
“The challenges that America and Colorado face today require leaders of courage,
integrity and principles.” said Rivera “I’m prepared to accept that
responsibility.”
Rivera’s remarks ranged from the core conservative principles that govern his
personal politics to the outline of “The Rivera Plan” which will stand as his
platform for the race. The top priority is supporting our military troops and
winning the war on terror. Rivera is the only republican in the primary field
that has served in the military.
“I’ll be a congressman that tirelessly supports the troops and protects our
homeland. I’ll defend our senior citizens and veterans, and stand up for family
values and personal responsibility.” stated Rivera. “I love this community and
will fight for it with the passion and dedication it deserves.”
Rivera was introduced by his Campaign Chairwoman Jan Dorn, Vice-Mayor Larry
Small, City Councilman Scott Hente and Mrs. Lynn Rivera. Rivera’s wife, Lynn,
and Retired-Lieutenant General Ed Anderson are the Honorary Co-Chairs of the
Rivera for Congress campaign.
Lionel Rivera was elected Mayor of Colorado Springs in 2003. Prior to that, he
served as Vice-Mayor and At-Large City Councilman. Rivera began a career as a
financial advisor after his honorable discharge from the United States Army.
