March is National Mental Retardation Awareness month

The ARC of the Pikes Peak Region, an affiliated chapter of the nation’s largest volunteer-based organization devoted to life-long issues of mental retardation and related developmental disabilities, marks National Mental Retardation Awareness Month. During March, The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region joins chapters of The Arc around the country in engaging in a media and public awareness campaign aimed at bringing attention to issues concerning people with mental retardation and their families for the 28th consecutive year.

To recognize Mental Retardation Awareness Month, The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region is promoting awareness throughout our community, delivering “thank you” gift baskets to service providers who work with people with developmental disabilities and on Sat, Mar 25th, The ARC will round out the month’s celebration with a Karaoke Party at Phantom Canyon Brewing Company. The ARC of the Pikes Peak Region will begin airing TV commercials the last week of March to raise awareness in our community and promote our upcoming Inaugural Benefit Concert to be held on April 8th at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium.

“National Mental Retardation Awareness Month is a wonderful opportunity for this fine community to celebrate the successes of so many of its citizens who also happen to have developmental disabilities. Full inclusion in community life is so essential to our culture and to our neighborhoods, and the Pikes Peak Region is making great strides towards achieving this vision.” said Teddi Roberts, Executive Director. “The ARC of the Pikes Peak Region also takes this opportunity to express our thanks to those in Colorado Springs who’ve been our strong supporters, and to invite others to learn more about us and our mission during March and during every month of the year.”

Chapters of the ARC around the country are embarking on a public awareness campaign this month to bring attention to their programs and activities. Through billboards, advertisements, media coverage, and public service announcements in newspapers, on radio, and on television, The ARC hopes to reach millions of people with its message of inclusion for people with mental retardation.

The ARC has espoused a set of Core Values that serve as the guiding principles of the national association and its affiliated chapters. These values include: People First, Democracy, Visionary Leadership, Community Participation, Diversity, and Integrity and Excellence.
