Stroke Study

The Colorado Neurological Institute and the Swedish Medical Center have been selected to participate in a pivotal clinical study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of investigational cortical stimulation therapy for recovery of hand/arm function in survivors of stroke. The EVEREST study is a randomized, multi-center study comparing the effects of cortical stimulation plus rehabilitation to rehabilitation alone. Cortical stimulation therapy involves the precise delivery of low levels of electricity to the surface of the brain via an implanted stimulator system.

The EVEREST study focuses on people age 21 years or older who have had an ischemic stroke at least four months prior to screening and suffered resulting weakness in one hand and/or arm. Stroke patients who would like to receive more information or enroll in the trial should contact the EVEREST study call center at 888-546-9779.

About Stroke
Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability worldwide. According to the American Stroke Association, over five million people in the United States are survivors of stroke, with approximately 700,000 additional strokes occurring annually. Each year over 200,000 people in the US become significantly and permanently disabled due to stroke. There are essentially no effective therapies available for these patients. The direct and indirect cost of stroke in 2005 in the US is estimated to be $57 billion.
