Denver Center Theatre Company presents A Christmas Carol

The shops and rehearsal rooms at the Denver Center Theatre Company are a flurry of activity as set, costume, prop and acting elves prepare to unwrap an entirely new musical production of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol for this holiday season.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens
Adapted for the Stage by Richard Hellesen
Music by David de Berry
Directed by Bruce K. Sevy
Nov 25 – Dec 24, 2005 (Opening Dec 2)
The Stage Theatre

Artistic Director Kent Thompson has selected Richard Hellesen’s (Denver Center World Premiere of Kingdom) recent adaptation of Dickens’ timeless story with original songs and music by David de Berry as a worthy successor to the beloved Laird Williamson/ Dennis Powers adaptation presented over the past 15 seasons at the Denver Center.

This new production is set in the streets, shops and homes of Victorian London with new sets, costumes, script and music. The challenge facing Hellesen in telling the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly old man who is haunted by spirits and learns the power of goodness, was to “enhance the elements which we all know and cherish from the work.” At the same time he did not want to “lose sight of the fact that Dickens had passionate and important things to say about the world of poverty and ignorance which he observed and experienced – and which still lives in the streets of our world. The true power of a classic is that it speaks to us, through time, of our time. We returned constantly to the novel – to find absent some things that years of sentimentalizing have tacked on to the story, and to rediscover things that are sometimes neglected or ignored in the theatre.”

The artistic staff for A Christmas Carol includes Director and Associate Artistic Director Bruce K. Sevy (All My Sons, Dinner With Friends and Master Class) and the Denver Center debuts of Musical Director Gregg Coffin (Geva Theatre Center, Alabama Shakespeare Festival and The Stratford Festival of Canada), Dance Choreographer Gina Cerimele - Mechley (Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival and Opera Theatre St. Louis), and Orchestrator Thom Jenkins (Georgia Shakespeare Festival, Alliance Theater and Atlanta's Center for Puppetry Arts).

Creating the world of Victorian London by designing the new production’s immense, complicated sets and detailed Victorian costumes was the challenging task of a veteran DCTC design team. Set Design is by Vicki Smith (Fire on the Mountain, The Misanthrope and Picnic) and the Costume Design is by Kevin Copenhaver (Oedipus Rex, Dirty Story and Blithe Spirit). They are joined by new Lighting Designer Liz Lee (Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Georgia Shakespeare Festival and Alliance Theatre) and Sound Designer Craig Breitenbach (A Flea in Her Ear, Fire on the Mountain and Oedipus Rex).
