Everything Nutcracker!
Buell Children’s Museum dresses up for the holidays!

The holidays are right around the corner, and so is the Buell Children’s Museum exhibition — “Everything Nutcracker,” Nov. 19 through Dec. 31, at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center.

We’ve gone nuts with this year’s holiday exhibition. It will be an enchanting journey into wonderland, reflecting the best of the timeless classic it emulates.

Delight at over 50 whimsical nutcrackers painted by local artists especially for this exhibit and then create your own miniature nutcracker to take home to your tree. Continue by visiting the Land of the Sweets. Step into a gingerbread land created by Pueblo artist Dorothy Mendoza. Sugar plums, candy canes and gumdrops galore decorate our walls and surround loads of holiday surprises. It’s Sugar & Spice and Everything Nice.

Decorate a paper gingerbread man or your own “Mother Ginger.” Try on the Nutcracker “Capers” and dress up in style as a character from Tchaikovsky’s ballet. Become the Mouse King or Snow Queen for a day! Make glittery crowns to celebrate the Nutcracker. Take inspiration from artist Kelly Paulk’s art pieces embellished with luxurious trims, chenille, feathers and satins, and then craft an elegant decorative tassel of your own. A peek at artist Lori Seibert’s handcrafted, festive Christmas characters will have you creating your own with fabric, felt, ribbon and bric-a-brac. Cut snowflakes and decorate your own Snow Kingdom. Learn the Russian or Chinese dance from the Nutcracker and perform it on the El Pomar Magic Carpet Theater stage.

Make your magical journey even more memorable with a trip through the Enchanted Frosty Forest, created by John Wilbar. This Sensations experience, sponsored by Danny & Kerry Studen, has sparkle and surprise around every corner. Help Santa find Rudolph in this fun space full of light, sound and video.

Examine the curious Tagua nut carvings direct from Panama and the Darien Rainforest. The beautiful animal art produced from these interesting legumes is helping to save the rainforest and endangered species and they make a unique and affordable handmade gift.

Don’t forget to say, “Happy Holidays!” and put your wish list in the golden mailbox. The museum is the official mailing place to the North Pole.

Visit Artrageous, the make-and-take art studio, to design your own holiday treasures from our collection of shiny, sparkly, recycled materials! When it comes to holiday greetings, nothing beats a handmade labor of love. Whatever

your style — elegant to playful — we provide the cool stuff to create a new greeting of your own. These cards are as fun to make as they are to receive.

Have you been naughty or nice? Mrs. Santa Claus will visit the children’s museum the first three Saturdays in December from noon to 2 p.m. So, bring your wish list and check it twice!

And don’t miss the traditional Teddy Bear Tree. This wonderful gift of Drs. Gregorio & Haydee Kort and family returns! We’ve got the tallest toy tree in town!

The Buell Children’s Museum holiday exhibits are sponsored by Comcast. Admission to the Arts Center, including the Buell Children’s Museum and Helen T. White Galleries, is $4 for adults and $3 for children. Members of the Arts Center receive free admission. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. excluding holidays. For more information, please call 719-295-7200 or stop by the Arts Center located at 210 N. Santa Fe Ave., just off of I-25, exit 98b.
