OJC announces new certificate program
Esthetician (Skin Care) to begin Spring Semester 2006
In an effort to keep up with demand for more advanced training in the field
of cosmetology, the Otero Junior College Cosmetology Career Academy will begin
offering three levels of Esthetician (skin care) training to both students and
licensed cosmetologists in the area.
According to Tammy Dorenkamp, director of the OJC Cosmetology Career Academy,
the skin care and spa industry is a fast-growing industry. “As the industry
matures, the need for highly trained and knowledgeable professionals is at an
all-time high,” said Dorenkamp. “Professional estheticians are needed in a wide
range of businesses, from day spas and salons, to cruise ships and destination
resorts. The modern medical practice has also found the skills and abilities of
highly-trained professional estheticians to be extremely helpful, making the
medical practices of dermatologists and plastic surgeons arenas for a skin care
specialist to put his or her talents and abilities to work,” she said.
The new Esthetician Program at Otero Junior College will offer three options of
study. The first option is an Esthetician (skin care) Certificate that has been
developed for students who are just entering the field of cosmetology.
Completion of the certificate program will take two semesters, beginning with
Spring Semester 2006 and continuing through Summer Semester 2006. Students in
the program will meet for 25 weeks every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to
4 p.m. Training includes skill development in the following services:
Facials, Facial Make up, Hair Removal, Massage, Management, Ethics,
Salesmanship, Sanitation, Disinfection, and Safety & Preparation. All training
is taught in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Office of
Barber and Cosmetology Licensure in preparation for students to test with the
State Board for licensure. This certificate also includes, upon completion, a
two day training workshop for MicroDermabrasion Equipment and Cosmetic
Resurfacing Exfoliation certification.
The second training option is Esthetician (skin care) Continuing Education,
specifically for licensed cosmetologists or estheticians who want to advance
their skills in skin care services. This advanced program of study will also
cover 25 weeks, beginning with Spring Semester 2006 and continuing through
Summer Semester 2006. Classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m. The training will include advanced skills in:
Facials, Facial Make up, Speed Waxing Hair Removal, Galvanic Current, High
Frequency and Types of Electrodes, Management, Ethics, Salesmanship, Sanitation,
Disinfection, and Safety. Upon competition, students may take a two day training
workshop for licensed practitioners who are seeking certification in
MicroDermabrasion Equipment and Cosmetic Resurfacing Exfoliation.
The third training option is Advanced Make-up Artist Continuing Education.
Acceptance into this program is also limited to licensed cosmetologist. This
advanced program of study will cover 25 weeks, beginning with Spring Semester
2006 and continuing through Summer Semester 2006. Classes will be held two days
a week with students having their choice of Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The training will include advanced skills in make-up as well
as the opportunity to take a two day training workshop for licensed
practitioners who are seeking certification in MicroDermabrasion Equipment and
Cosmetic Resurfacing Exfoliation.
All programs are taught in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the
Colorado Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure.
All coursework in Esthetics is one-on-one with instructors; therefore class size
is limited in order to provide comprehensive training. To learn more about the
program or to register for enrollment, contact Tammy Dorenkamp, program
director, at 719-384-6991 or the OJC Student Services Center at 719-384-6831.
