New Motor Vehicle Office To Open
Larger Facility to Replace Widefield Office Which Closes on October 7th.

The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Office is planning to open a New Motor Vehicle branch office at the Southeast Corner of Powers Boulevard and Airport Road on Monday, October 17, 2005, according to Bob Balink, County Clear & Recorder. “That’s the schedule,” says Balink. “If we receive the final inspections and the Certificate of Occupancy before then; and we certainly expect that to happen,” The week of October 10-14 will be needed- between the Widefield Office closing and the new Powers Branch opening- to move and reinstall motor vehicle files, equipment and data line at the new location.

“ This is a long overdue move and we are hopeful that the new Powers Branch office will relieve some of the burden on our other two offices,” Balink stated. “We’ve had unprecedented and unacceptable wait times since early summer but with three branches of equal size we fully expect lines to decrease at the Chapel Hill Mall and Centennial Hall offices,” he continued. According to Motor Vehicle Department data the Widefield office has been serving less than 20 % of the citizens in El Paso County, while the other two branches handled about 80% of the Motor Vehicle Department volume.

In addition to the move, all positions at each Branch Office will be permanent assignments; including the Branch Manager, Assistant Branch Manager, technical support personnel, and the entire counter staff. According to Balink, “We fully expect these changes to provide better customer service to all the citizens of El Paso County. And, at the same time, we are strongly encouraging citizens to renew by mail, whenever possible, to further reduce the wait time for others.”

The new Powers Motor Vehicle Branch Office will also provide Driver’s License Renewal Services, as do the Chapel Hills Mall and Centennial Hall branches. These services include: Driver’s License renewals; reissue of lost Driver’s licenses; transfer license from another state; name change on existing license; and renewal of Colorado I.D.s. However, other services such as issuing new Driver's Licenses and Colorado I.D.s; administration of the driving and written tests; processing reinstatements; issuance of commercial driver’s licenses; and providing copies of motor vehicle driving records must still be handled at the State Motor Vehicle office located at 4420 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Suite 188 ( about a half mile east of Academy Boulevard).

For further information please contact the Motor Vehicle Department manager, Joyce Willener, at (719) 520-6244.
