Lou Gonzales Memorial Scholarship

Applications are being accepted for the Lou Gonzales Memorial Scholarship at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The scholarship is named for the late Lucille Oller, better known as Lou Gonzales, a Gazette columnist and writer who died March 8, 2003, of complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). She was 55.

The preferred candidate will be a Hispanic woman older than 30 who is majoring in English or communication with plans for a career in journalism.

Candidates must demonstrate financial need. They must submit a typewritten, double-spaced 1,000-word essay on the subject “how I plan to use my major to change my community,” to be judged by Gazette staff members. Essays and applications are due Oct. 28, with one award of $500 to be given for spring 2006.

Applications are available at www.uccs.edu. Click on Financial Aid, Scholarships, then College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Scholarships. Or go to the UCCS Financial Aid Office in Cragmor Hall, or The Gazette, 30 S. Prospect St., to pick up an application.

Send applications to The Gazette, Attn: Gonzales Scholarship, P.O. Box 1779, Colorado Springs 80901.

To donate, write checks to CU Foundation, with “Lou Gonzales Scholarship” written on the memo line, and send to CU Foundation, Attn: Diane Dickerson, 1420 Austin Bluffs Parkway, P.O. Box 7150, Colorado Springs 80933. Donations are tax-deductible.
