Colorado State University – Pueblo offers three-part immigration series this fall

Varying perspectives of immigration, including population trends in Colorado and the impact those numbers will have on state and local politics, will be presented this fall during a three-part immigration series sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Political Science Program at Colorado State University – Pueblo. All events will be held at CSU-Pueblo and are open to the public at no charge.

The series will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 with a discussion of immigration issues that are impacting state and local politics by Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff in Psychology 205A. A reception will precede the presentation at 2:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, local immigration issues will be addressed by a panel of individuals who work with the immigrant population on a daily basis. The panel discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in the Occhiato University Center Hearthwell Lounge. Panelists will include Jayne Mazur, Director of Catholic Charities; Elizabeth Velez, Clinical Case Worker-Catholic Charities; Sister Nancy Crafton, Los Pobres; Amber Tafoya, Attorney and Director of the Southern Colorado Coalition of Immigration Resources; and Adriana Fernandez Ruffer, an immigrant from Argentina, who also is an attorney and works with immigrants at Catholic Charities.

The final event in the series will be a look at the composition of the state’s population by Colorado State Demographer Elizabeth Garner from the Department of Local Affairs in Denver. In November, Garner will discuss immigrant population trends in Colorado, including the latest data on the numbers of immigrants in Colorado and the impact of these immigration trends on specific communities. An announcement of this date will be forthcoming.

For further information on the immigration series, contact Gayle Berardi, CSU-Pueblo’s Political Science Program, at 549-2679 or at gayle.berardi@colostate-pueblo.edu.
