National Hispanic Institute’s Youth Leadership Conference
Colorado Springs incoming Sophomores compete at the National Hispanic
Institute’s Youth Leadership Conference at Adams State College in Alamosa. The
Colorado Springs team emerged with 2nd runner up, with 6 team members reaching
‘All Star Team’ status and 2 of the team members will attend the National YLC
this October in Texas.
Colorado Springs students, along with students from across Colorado, New Mexico,
Arizona and Texas, visited Adams State College July 7-10 to participate in the
National Hispanic Institute’s Youth Leadership Conference. The students
participated in public speaking competitions, such as mock trial, extemporaneous
speaking, cross-examination, oratory and adjudication.
The Colorado Springs participating students were from, Cheyenne Mtn., Lewis
Palmer, Harrison, Coronado, Mesa Ridge, Fountain Ft. Carson, and Widefield. Many
of the schools helped their students with $100 scholarships toward the
conference.
Tanya Garduno, of Nouveau Economy Solutions, Inc., taught the students during a
fast passed 5 week session at Devry University. Devry generously provided
computer space and scholarships to the program for those in need.
The National Hispanic Institute was founded in 1979 to nurture leaders for a
growing and increasingly diverse U.S. Latino community. The institute also
offers leadership development programs for sophomore, junior, senior, and
college-level students, as well as national and international travel
opportunities. The leadership conference not only impacts the individual
students, but their communities as well.
In order for students to participate in the institute’s conferences, they must
hold a 3.2 gpa, be in good standing in their schools and be nominated by a
school counselor or administrator. The students then undergo a screening process
by the institute to insure their participation.
