Red Panda Arrives at Pueblo Zoo
A new animal has arrived at the Pueblo Zoo. She is rooming with the Muntjacs
(barking deer) and appears to enjoy her new digs. Her name is LaNaO and she is a
Red Panda. She was captive born at the Erie Zoo, May 26, 2003. Red Pandas also
known as lesser pandas resemble a raccoon in size and appearance. It is called a
Chitwa or a Wah in its native Nepal. The red panda weighs 6.6-134.2 pounds. It
lives in mountain forests with a bamboo under story. The Red panda is native to
southern Asia; Bhutan, China, India, Lao Peoples Democratic Republic and Nepal
They feed mainly on bamboo, but also eat acorns, roots, berries, lichens and
occasionally eggs and young birds.

Red panda have a bear-like body with thick russet fur. The belly and limbs
are black and there are white markings on the side of the head and above the
small eyes. They have thick bushy tails with light brown rings, pointed ears and
a pointed snout. They are slow-moving on the ground but are remarkably agile the
trees.
LaNaO is listed on the Species Survival Plan and has a transponder inserted. Red
pandas are not listed in the United States Endangered Species list. They are
CITES Appendix I and Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Redlist. They are also a
protected species in China and Nepal where they are considered endangered.
