HARRISON SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO

1060 Harrison Road
Colorado Springs, CO 80906
Administrative Office – 579-2000
Superintendent: Vic Meyers
On the Web – www.harrison.k12.co.us

BOUNDARIES: Located south of downtown Colorado Springs. A detailed map of the district is available on its web site.

NEXT YEAR: Harrison School District Two will be opening Fox Meadow Middle School in place of Gorman Middle School this year. Over the next three years, focuses on science, mathematics, technology, character education and leadership will be built into the intense curriculum at Fox Meadow. The science and technology magnet program and its embedded gifted and talented program will be in full swing by the fall of 2007. The new school will continue the strong reading and writing efforts that have resulted in substantial literacy gains for ethnic minorities at Gorman. Meanwhile, construction is underway on Mountain Vista Community School for grades K-8 with the school scheduled to open in August 2005. In addition, the district adopted a Core Reading Program for all 14 elementary schools, ensuring that students transferring within the district experience little to no disruption in learning. The curriculum implementation has been supported by 15 Elementary Instructional Resource Teachers who provide leadership and specialized support to classroom teachers. HSD2 uses the Turnleaf Data Mining System, embedded staff development, and instructional resource coaches to improve teaching and learning. With a loss in revenue due to the State Finance Act, the district adjusted its budget parameters to maintain class sizes, one of the district’s priorities. Thus, non-salary expenditures are reduced by approximately 8 percent. This also addresses the Board of Education’s commitment to their long-term philosophy of no reduction in staff. The HSD2 Board of Education and staff continue to stand behind the district’s philosophy of serving the needs of the whole child – they are more than just a score.
