Kerry Visits Southeast Colorado
Yes, we needed to be there. A presidential candidate was visiting Southern
East Colorado, Lamar and La Junta. This was the first visit from a presidential
candidate since FDR (Franklin D. Roosevelt for those too young to remember)
1936.
I arrived at the park in La Junta about 10:45 a.m.; it was already a gathering
place for so many people. With temperatures already in the 90’s, I looked and
found a place in the shade. It was after 12 noon when the caravan of suburban’s
and buses rolled, onto the street adjoining the park, the Saturday crowd was
energized by the anticipation of seeing a presidential candidate in their town.
Temperature at this time was about 100 degrees.

A few moments later, the Kerry entourage was on stage with hundreds of signs and
voices in unison. First, to be introduced was Elizabeth Edwards, she spoke
briefly. She in turn introduced the Presidential candidate’s wife, Teresa
Heinz-Kerry. Teresa spoke of the importance of healthcare and when she spoke in
Spanish, the crowd, about 40% Hispanic, cheered loudly. Teresa Heinz-Kerry
introduces John Edwards who spoke briefly and introduced John Kerry.
His spoke of avoiding “unnecessary” wars. He was big on health care. He said,
“The policy most Americans are living with today is a ‘pray you don’t get sick’
policy,”
Upon leaving Kerry urged backers to hit the polls in what he called “the most
important election of our time.”
“This time, not only will your vote count, but it will be counted! Let us take
back our democracy. God Bless American and God Bless La Junta,” he said.
