Dr. Edward Fuentes Named Deputy Superintendent
Dr. Fuentes has come to Pueblo from Austin, Texas where he has held the
position of Chief Operations Officer at the Austin independent School District (AISD)
since July 2003. Until July of 2003 AISD's upper administrative structure was
comprised of four deputy superintendents, where they condensed those four
positions into three chief officer positions. Prior to his position as Chief
Operations Officer, Dr. Fuentes was the Deputy Superintendent for Bilingual
Education and Human Resources Development at AISD from January, 2000 to July,
2003.
Prior to his role with the Austin School District, Dr. Fuentes had an extensive
career, spanning from 1979 to 2000, in a broad array of federal agencies
overseeing K-12 education on a national level. Dr. Fuentes was the National
Directory for GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate
Programs) in Washington , D.C. from March 1999 to January, 2000. The GEAR UP
program had a budget of $200 million to support early college preparation and
awareness activities for low-income students. From April 1996 to March 1999, Dr.
Fuentes was the Director of the National Institute on the Education of At-Risk
Students which promotes excellence and equity in the education of children and
youth placed at risk of educational failure. In 1994, Dr. Fuentes was the
Director of the National Institute on Educational Governance, Finance, Policy
Making and Management also in Washington, D.C. From 1979 to 1994, he held posts
with National and Minority Languages Affairs; Office of Planning, Budget and
Evaluation and the National Institute of Education.
Dr. Fuentes also has experience as a research psychologist, school psychologist,
adjunct college professor and elementary school teacher. Dr. Fuentes has
consulted for numerous national education organizations.
Dr. Fuentes' education credentials include a B.A. in Psychology from California
State University; M.S. in Education (Counseling) from California State
University and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Stanford University. He
was also a Ford Foundation Fellow from 1973-1975.
As Deputy Superintendent for District 60, Dr. Fuentes will oversee technology,
human resources, facilities, maintenance and operations, and the district's bond
program. He will also assume direct responsibilities in the absence of the
superintendent.
