School District 11 is the "District of Choice” for Colorado Springs families.
The district is focused on increased student achievement through alignment of

staff, students and parents will have a “no excuses” attitude. District 11 has
38 elementary schools, one K-8 school, nine middle schools, five high schools,
six alternative schools and six charter schools, and parents are able to find
just the right program for their child’s educational needs. To learn more about

Foreign language speakers: Non-native English speakers are encouraged to visit
their neighborhood schools for help. Each site can call on translators for
assistance. Some information on D-11’s Web site is in Spanish. D-11's Spanish
message line is at 520-2012. Contact the nearest school or call the English As a
Second Language program, 520-2417.
Choice process: Colorado law allows students to attend any school they choose
through a permit process. The application window for next year for D-11 students
who want to attend a school other than their neighborhood school is Nov. 1-Feb.
1. New families have one month to apply for a choice permit. Permit applications
should be picked up at the school the student wants to attend. There is no
charge for the permit. Transportation is not provided for choice students. For
information about permits, call 520-2035. D-11 students wishing to transfer to
another district should check with the other district for permit procedures.
Transportation: Check with your school, call D-11’s Transportation Department,
520-2940, or visit Web site
www.cssd11.k12.co.us/ transportation.
Special needs students: Parents of students with emotional, mental or physical
special needs may call the Special Education Office, 520-2148, for information
about services.
Breakfast/lunch program: Lunch prices are $1.80 per meal for elementary school
students and $1.95 for middle and high school students. White milk is 50 cents
and chocolate milk is 55 cents. Breakfast, if offered, including milk, is 95
cents for elementary school students and $1.05 for middle and high school
students. Families who meet certain income guidelines may qualify for free or
reduced-price lunches. Applications are available at each school, or call Food
Services, 520-2924, for information. Many schools offer breakfast. Call the
individual school for times.
Day care: Before- and after-school day care is available at these elementary
schools: Audubon, Bates, Bristol, Carver, Chipeta, Columbia, Fremont, Henry,
Jackson, Jefferson, Lincoln, Longfellow, Madison, Midland, Penrose, Queen
Palmer, Rudy, Scott, Stratton, Taylor, Trailblazer and Wilson. Call schools for
times, providers and costs.
Head Start: The federal program Head Start is available at Adams, Audubon,
Bristol, Carver, Edison, Longfellow, Midland, Pike and Queen Palmer.
Kindergarten: Kindergarten is available at all D-11 elementary schools. Full-day
kindergartens are offered at many District 11 schools. Some full-day
kindergarten programs are tuition-based, some are funded by Title I, some are
funded by the Colorado Preschool Project. Tuition-based programs are offered at
Chipeta, Madison, Martinez, Penrose, Rudy, Steele, Taylor and Trailblazer
elementaries for the 2004-05 school year. To enroll in the program, contact one
of these schools to determine if space is available. Tuition-based programs
require a registration fee of $265. First payment is due Sept. 1, and last
payment is due April 1 with no charge for May. Please call 520-2163 for further
information.
Registration: Elementary and middle school students should go to their closest
school but are asked to call in advance. Students should bring immunization
records, Social Security cards, birth certificates and proof of family residency
such as a driver’s license, receipt from a utility company or a copy of a lease
showing the address. High school students should go to the closest high school
to register with that site’s registrar. The five high schools are generally open
7:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. each weekday throughout the summer, but students should call
in advance. Students are asked to bring birth certificates, immunization
records, proofs of address and copies of their last transcripts, listing classes
taken. To reach the registrar at each high school: Coronado - 328-3615, Doherty
- 328-6406, Mitchell - 328-6615, Palmer - 328-5106, Wasson - 328-2015.
Athletics: Each high school registrar has the forms required for playing sports,
practice schedules and other information.
