Pueblo Earns AACSB Accreditation for Business School

The Malik and Seeme Hasan School of Business at Colorado State University-Pueblo now ranks among the top 30 percent of all business schools in the world. The University announced this week that it has become only the 384th institution in the world to achieve unconditional accreditation of both its undergraduate and graduate degree programs in business administration thanks to a recent vote by the the AACSB International Board of Directors. AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is the premier accrediting agency and service organization for business schools. Rex Fuller, Dean of the School of Business, received the news Dec. 19 after a final vote by AACSB board members.

“This accreditation represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide and confirms this university’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement,” said CSU-Pueblo President Ron Applbaum. “The accreditation announcement is a tremendous way to usher in the new year and the Spring Semester. I congratulate the faculty and staff in the School of Business for their attention to task and detail and for their efforts to build such a program of excellence.”

To achieve accreditation, business programs must satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to strategic management of resources, interactions of faculty and students in the educational process, and achievement of learning goals in degree programs.  These standards are mission-linked.    For information on the global distribution of accredited programs, click on: http://www.aacsb.edu/members/aacsb.asp  )

During the lengthy accreditation process, a team of business school deans with detailed knowledge of management education visited and evaluated CSU-Pueblo, applying accreditation standards that are widely accepted in the educational community. The team presented its findings to the initial accreditation committee and the AACSB board for consideration last month.  Headquartered in St. Louis, Mo., AACSB International is a not-for-profit organization consisting of more than 900 educational organizations and corporations. Its mission is excellence in management education in colleges and universities.

Among the strengths noted in the accreditation report were excellent academic advising, small class sizes, a diverse student body with a strong sense of the value of furthering their education, as well as a full-time faculty with  Ph.D.s in their fields of specialization.  The accreditation team noted student assessment results, which showed a high degree of student satisfaction with the programs’ international perspective, its emphases on social/ethical and technology issues, and the development of communication skills. Graduates also highly rate the school’s responsiveness to student concerns and the accessibility to faculty.

The accreditation report commended the school’s state–of-the-art classrooms, including nine high-tech classrooms and student break-out rooms as well as a strong emphasis on professional development through events such as an annual etiquette dinner and a senior seminar that prepares students for their job search. Fuller said the formal two-year accreditation process would not have been successful without the support of administration, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who all played a role in the favorable vote by the AACSB board.

Team members also were impressed by tremendous community support, evidenced by numerous student internships, guest speakers, and an active Board of Advisors. Active student organizations and a Dean’s Student Advisory Council were noted as appropriate channels for communication between administration and students.

“I have no doubts that this seal of approval by AACSB will boost our recruitment efforts with both international and Colorado students and cultivate pride among current students and graduates of our program,” Fuller said.
