Memorial Ceremony for Sgt Melissa Valles held at the Soldiers Memorial Chapel at Fort Carson, CO

First Hispanic female from Fort Carson and 2nd Hispanic female nationwide to die in Iraq
Sgt. Melissa Valles was born in Texas on January 27, 1977. She gave her life for what she believed in on July 9 in Balad, Iraq. Sgt. Melissa Valles died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

She graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1995, she attended Southwest Texas Junior College for a year and later joined the Army. She reported for active duty in October 1996.

Memorial Services were held at Soldiers Memorial Chapel at Fort Carson on July 16, 2003.
She is survived by her Mother, Mari Anita Valles; Stepfather, Carlos Gomez; Sister, Mirabel Valles; and Brother, Alberto Valles.
