Getting An Online Education Might Change Your Life
The concept of learning from a distance has been around for quite a while. Correspondence courses became all the rage in the 1800s when dependable mail service brought education to the masses. Each time a new method of delivering information has been invented, a new form of “distance learning” has been introduced. Telephone, radio, and television have all had their moments in the sun as a form of distance learning. CD-ROMs and DVDs have been some of the more recent formats. But all of these pale in comparison to online learning, where true interaction (sometimes real-time) has finally become possible. According to the “Distance Education and Training Council,” there are presently over 500 correspondence/distance education institutions offering programs through the Internet. An
Internet search for “online learning” will yield over 700,000 results. Why so popular? In fact, it’s revolutionary, because for the first time true, interactive learning through e-mail, streaming media, and virtual classrooms is available. An online student’s educational choices are seemingly endless. Degree, certificate, and vocational programs are offered in fields as diverse as accounting, taxidermy, nursing, high school diplomas, construction, and the law. Whatever a student is interested in studying, chances are there’s a school offering it. Some online programs can be completed in as little as a few months, others might take three or four years of study. What are the real advantages of learning online?
Flexibility and convenience When asked to name the biggest obstacle to earning a degree, a certificate, or technical training, what’s mentioned most often is time constraints. Working adults obviously don’t have the time to attend school during the day, and the further constraints of family obligations only make matters worse. Online learning not only allows a student to choose when to study, but also allows them to choose where they study from. Some choose to study from home at night, others from work during lunch, others while they’re on the road with a laptop. Online learning truly offers unlimited possibilities. Availability If you live in a major metropolitan area, chances are you’re close to many colleges and technical schools. Many, though, don’t have
suitable learning institutions located near them. For those people, online learning truly opens up a world of possibilities. With the Internet, these students can pick and choose a school that’s just right for them, and an online program that is perfectly suited to their desires. There are, of course, other advantages to online learning. Without having to deal with the prevalent competition that is commonplace among traditional schools, online students can focus entirely on their coursework and personal advancement. Online learning also forces a student to focus. There’s no ‘skipping’ classes in online education. Is online education for you? If you’re looking to start a career, advance in your present job, or move to a more rewarding profession, online education may be the
key to getting you there. If you’re a focused individual intent on earning a degree or vocational certificate, there’s no better time to do it without ever setting foot on a college campus.
