Nuestra Música

Over 200 people enjoyed the entertainment provided at the Penrose House on September 6, 2001. The event was a kickoff for the Nuestra Musica celebration that was held on September 15, 2001 at the Youth Outreach Center from 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM.

Providing colorful entertainment were Mariachi Real Del Oro and Ballet Folklorico de La Raza. Hector Diaz and his dance partner, Linda Lutz, gave a salsa dance demonstration.

Mr. Theo Gregory, Outreach Director for the El Pomar Foundation, Mr. Roman L. Tafoya, President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Colorado Springs gave opening remarks. Mr. Tafoya explained "The purpose of Nuestra Musica is to make the community aware of the mission and activities of the Hispanic organizations involved in the musical celebration, to celebrate Latin Music as part of Hispanic Heritage month and finally to provide a fun event at an affordable cost for the entire community."

Posters were displayed that showed the name of each organization, their Mission statement and the persons who serve in these organizations. The organizations shown were: The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Colorado Springs, The Latino Unity Council, El Cince de Mayo Inc., Latino Student Union, LULAC, Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers, Hispanic Arts Council, The Hispanic Leadership Forum and The National Association of Hispanic Realtors.

Among those enjoying the festivities were: Bruce and Gretchen Kolbezen, Henry Quintana, Vice Mayor Lionel Rivera and his wife Lynn, Luis Saldarriaga, Gina Lopez, Gina Alvarado, Gene Sanchez, Emi Tafoya, Drs., Lloyd and Rebecca Trujillo, Mike Berniger, George Guerrero, Undersheriff Terry Maketa, Sergeant Jeannette Whitney, Sergeant Rafael Cintron, Jim Bensberg, Antonio Pariente, Joseph & Clair Garcia, Linda Jensen, Bill Green, Sue Woodward, Willie Breazell, Norma Aquilar, Steve Griswold, Lucie Gernia, and Willie & Ursula Smith.

The Nuestra Musica Celebration was posponed till November 3, 2001, do to the attack on America on September 11th.
