Mazda Adds More Zoom To 2001 Miata
-Best-Selling Two-Seat Roadster of All Time Boasts New Performance Enhancements-
Mazda's advertising is about experiencing the uninhibited joy of motion we all felt as children - what the company calls "Zoom-Zoom." There is perhaps no better example of this feeling than the incomparable Mazda Miata. For 2001, Mazda has added more zoom to its legendary roadster in the form of greater performance, by adding variable valve timing, a more rigid chassis and larger brakes. In addition, the 2001 Miata is now available with 16-inch alloy wheels, a six-speed manual transmission, more aggressive styling and a host of interior improvements.
Yet with all of the changes that Mazda has made to the 2001 Miata, the company's engineers have remained true to the concept of a "oneness between horse and rider" that has guided the development of the Miata since its inception. This philosophy has allowed the Miata to remain a pure expression of the sports car genre, even in the face of new and more expensive competitors from other manufacturers.
For 2001, the Miata receives the most significant performance upgrades in its 12-year history. While the 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine is retained, it is now topped by a DOHC cylinder head with variable valve timing (VVT) on the intake cam, giving the Miata an additional seven horsepower. The Miata now delivers 142 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 125 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. The compression ratio has been increased to 10.0:1 (up from 9.5:1).
More importantly, the VVT system provides more power and torque throughout the revrange, making the Miata even more flexible in daily use. Even with he increased power, fuel economy is 23 mpg city and 28 mpg highway with the standard five- speed manual transmission.
There are three Miata models - Miata, Miata LS and Miata Special Edition. The Miata comes standard with amenities such as power steering, power windows, power mirrors, five-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels, a NARDI® leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning, Windblockers™, fog lights and an AM/FM/CD audio system with power antenna. The Miata LS adds tan leather seating surfaces, tan top, cruise control, power door locks, 16-inch alloy wheels, Torsen® limited-slip differential, strut tower brace, remote keyless entry system and a 200-watt Bose® AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers.
For the first time, a six-speed manual transmission is available on the Miata LS. Previously, this smooth-shifting gearbox had only been offered on limited-production models of the Miata. A four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission also is offered on both Miata models.
The Miata is renowned for its handling prowess, but Mazda's engineers still found ways to sharpen its responses. Key to this improvement is the enhancements made to the chassis of the 2001 Miata. Bending stiffness is improved 16 percent and torsional rigidity is increased 22 percent on models equipped with 16-inch wheels (13% and 6% on models with 15-inch wheels). These gains result from the addition of a wider gusset at the rear of the transmission tunnel, added reinforcements beneath the cockpit and strengthened side sills. The result is sharper turn-in response and a more solid and secure feel.
On the Miata, an optional Suspension Package includes the strut-tower brace, 16-inch alloy wheels and 205/45R16 tires and Torsen® limited-slip differential of the Miata LS and adds a set of Bilstein® shock absorbers.
To help the Miata handle its increased power, on vehicles with 16-inch wheels and tires, Mazda has increased the size of the brakes (10.6-in front and 10.9-in rear), increased the size of the brake master cylinder and vacuum booster and utilized higher friction brake pads. ABS brakes are available on the Miata LS and includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution, which varies the front-to-rear brake bias depending on vehicle load.
The timeless and classic styling of the Miata takes on a more aggressive look thanks to a new front fascia with larger headlights and a grille opening that adopts Mazda's five-point shape. The headlights are larger and feature projector beams and multi-surface reflector lights. The taillights are redesigned as well and echo the appearance of the headlights.
Inside the Miata, the interior trim has been upgraded for 2001. Most noticeable to the driver will be the white-faced gauges with chrome rings and sportier high-back seats covered in new black cloth on the Miata or new leather on the Miata LS. The center console has been redesigned with covered cupholders and relocated power window switches. The driver's footrest has also been improved. The door trim has been revised and the Miata LS adds chrome inside door handles for a more luxurious appearance.
The 2001 Mazda Miata features dual depowered air bags with a key-operated de-activation switch for the passenger-side air bag. In addition, Mazda has added safety belt pre-tensioners and force limiters for enhanced security.
With well over half-a-million Miatas now on the road worldwide, Guinness World records has recognized the car as the best-selling two-seat roadster of all time. Of these, more than 250,000 Miatas have been sold in North America.
Since its introduction, both the enthusiast and consumer media have hailed the Mazda Miata. It has been named to Automobile Magazine's "All-Stars" list an unprecedented 11 times, is one of Car & Driver's "10Best Cars" for 2001 and has received best-in-class recommendations from other leading consumer publications.
Like every Mazda model, the Miata comes with a three-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll free number, Miata owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. For all 2001 Mazda vehicles, the company will provide a free loaner car in the event a warrantable condition requires the use of a rental car.
The 2001 Mazda Miata is covered by a comprehensive three-year/50,000-mile warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. In addition, the Miata is covered by a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.
